Michael Pollan and Time Travel

I have been reading some Michael Pollan lately, and I must say, I’m impressed. First I read The Omnivore’s Dilemma, then In Defense of Food.

I do, however, take offense on a few points. Pollan’s effort to move the American diet back in time is a huge step in the right direction, but he doesn’t go far enough. He seems to think we should step back 100 years or so and give it another shot. I think we should wind the clocks back even further, more like 10,000 years. Surprisingly, this seemingly major time step only leads to a few differences.

Specifically, my primary complaint is that he supports consumption of wheat in whole-grain products. I’m also not a huge fan of the steps he takes to arrive at the “mostly plants” portion of his mantra. Let’s dive in.

Why I’m Not a Raw Vegan

Already this week I answered a casting call for paleo beach bodies (initiated by a raw vegan blogger), and shared why I believe the two camps should cooperate (and even appreciate each other). Today I’ll explain why I’m not a raw vegan myself.

I promise this is the last thing I’ll write about this for a long time.

My reasoning after the jump. (more…)

My Leangains Meals

Leangains already has a few posts up on possible meals (1, 2). Today’s post is an example PWO menu.

You will notice that my food choices represent a moderate departure from paleo. Most would agree that protein powder is not quite paleo/primal, and I go a little overboard with it PWO. Also, Rice Krispies are a little controversial, but it’s just toasted white rice, and while not a significant source of micronutrients, white rice doesn’t have the nasty stuff that keeps brown rice off the menu. I’m still keeping my food gluten-free and without added sugar (ok like 4g of sugar in the cereal), and outside of the PWO window I keep it very clean paleo/primal.

I’m not planning to run this protocol forever, but I do expect that IF and cyclic low-carb with PWO overfeeds will be a part of my life for a long time. Also, I love the training. Read on.

Movement for Osteoarthritis and More

I’m taking an Orthopaedic Biomechanics class right now, so expect some fun stuff on bones and joints over the next few months.

This morning the professor read us a few excerpts from yesterday’s WSJ article on osteoarthritis treatment, and I’d like to do the same here. I’m not going to get scientifically in-depth today, I’ll just give a few thoughts.

The main premise of the article is that an increasing number of health care providers are recommending movement as a treatment for osteoarthritis. Read on for quotes and discussion.

Real Life Raw Vegans, or “Eat and Let Eat”

Though I remained relatively civilized, I feel my post yesterday (and the surrounding tweeting) was simply fuel for a very petty fire. Worse than simply being petty, I feel the silly bickering creates the illusion that there is something significant for the raw vegan and paleo camps to argue about.

The truth is that the paleo/primal and raw vegan communities have more in common that incendiary posts from some jackass would have you believe.

I’ll take this opportunity to share my only (to my knowledge) face to face encounter with a raw food vegan.

Read on.
